LSVT Big and Loud
George received a referral for physical and speech therapy from his primary care physician. Through our home health agency, George was able to obtain in-home therapies. “LSVT” stands for the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment. LSVT – LOUD is a treatment for speech disorders associated with Parkinson’s disease. It focuses on increasing vocal loudness and is delivered by a speech therapist in sixteen one-hour sessions spread over four weeks. A derivative of this treatment, known as LSVT BIG, is used in treating movement aspects of Parkinson’s disease.
George had much benefit from this program, but he found it difficult to do the practice exercises on a regular basis. Also, as his disease progressed, he struggled to find the energy and motivation to put forth the effort it requires.
General Exercise
It is my belief (from observing George and also speaking with other Parkinson’s caregivers) that exercise is vital to maintain mobility. Before he started having balance issues, George would work out at the fitness center on a regular basis doing cardio and exercises with hand weights. Later, we purchased a three-wheeled bicycle to enable him to not only strengthen his legs, but to enjoy fresh air and sunshine outdoors when the weather allowed.
Mental exercises (playing games such as checkers these days) and social interactions are also very helpful to keep Parkinson’s-related dementia at bay and to lift his spirits. While he finds it difficult to get in and out of a car and go visiting, he enjoys seeing family members here at home.
